Guttenberghaus Trail in Dachstein: the ideal alpine hike or trail run

Route parameters:

Length: 12.5 km

Elevation gain: 1 055 m

Terrain difficulty: easy

The Guttenberghaus Trail is the ideal choice for those who have limited time in the Dachstein area but still want to experience a full-fledged alpine route with open views and significant elevation gain.

The route is not long, but it is very steep from the very first meters. Right at the start, it made it clear to us that we would have to work hard to reach the top. However, the reward is the gradually opening views of the surrounding peaks of Dachstein and the wide Alpine valleys.

ROUTE DESCRIPTION: :

The ascent to Guttenberghaus begins almost immediately with a steep climb, and the pace of the climb hardly slows down until you reach the mountain hut.

The trail is very well marked and easy to follow along its entire length. It leads mainly through open terrain, so with every meter climbed, beautiful views of the Dachstein peaks and the surrounding Alpine landscape gradually open up.

We walked this route as part of a day trip to the via ferrata, which leads over one of the highest ridges in the Dachstein area. If you want to combine a classic hike with a greater adventure, this is a great combination. You can find more about this via ferrata here.

Guttenberghaus with a dog

From a technical point of view, the route is also very dog-friendly. There are no chains or exposed sections that would require extra caution.

The ascent and descent are easily manageable for an active dog.

What I recommend taking with you

There is minimal shade on the route and the elevation gain is quite significant, so it is worth taking basic equipment with you:

Food at Guttenberghaus

I would plan the trip so that you have lunch at Guttenberghaus. In my opinion, they serve one of the best meals in the Dachstein area.

After a strenuous climb, you will really enjoy the Knedlsuppe with beer.

Summary

There are many well-known via ferratas in the vicinity of Guttenberghaus. If you are looking for a more leisurely hike or have limited time for your trip, climbing to this hut is a great choice.

The route is short but intense. You will get a good workout, enjoy great food at the mountain hut, and take in some of the most beautiful views in the Dachstein region.
