Tre Cime di Lavaredo: How to enjoy the iconic trail without the crowds and unnecessary costs

Route parameters:

Length: 19.9 km

Elevation gain: 901 m

Terrain difficulty: easy

The Tre Cime di Lavaredo circuit is one of the most famous hikes in the Dolomites, and rightly so. These iconic rock towers attract tourists from all over the world, and during the season there are often so many people that the place loses its beauty.

But if you want to enjoy Tre Cime in peace, away from the crowds and as cheaply as possible, I’ve put together a few tips to help you get the most out of the route.

ROUTE DESCRIPTION:

The circuit around Tre Cime does not include any long or steep climbs or technical descents. We walked this route as part of our two-day crossing and took it as an easier day, ideal for regeneration.

The route leads through completely open terrain with breathtaking views of the Dolomite peaks. The dramatic peaks of the Cadini di Misurina group are also visible from the trail, which seemed truly dramatic after the intense experience of the previous day.

As the entire route is sunny, it is important to think about UV protection. We recommend a light cap and a breathable functional T-shirt that wicks away sweat and protects against overheating.

Tips for enjoying Tre Cime in peace and on a budget

  • Set off early in the morning – the largest concentration of people is between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., as buses run directly to Tre Cime.
  • Travel outside the peak season – if possible, plan your visit before the peak tourist season.
  • Do the whole circuit – most people gather between the Forcella Longeres and Rifugio A. Lavaredo huts, but the route is much more pleasant beyond that.
  • Bring food with you – prices at the huts are high and there is often a lack of seating.
  • Use the toilets before you reach the huts – the toilets here are subject to a fee and the queues are often long.

Tre Cime with your dog

Thanks to the easy terrain, the circuit is also ideal for dogs in good physical condition. However, you must take into account that the route is completely open, so the only source of water is a small lake near the Lange Alm hut. We recommend bringing a folding bowl and enough water so that your four-legged friend can comfortably complete the entire route.

Summary

Tre Cime is definitely worth a visit, even though it has become a tourist destination during the season. The rocks are unique and offer scenery that you won’t see anywhere else. If you have the opportunity, set out early in the morning to watch the sunrise.
