How to sleep cheaply in the Alps: tips for bivouacking, apps, and wild camping
Sleeping in the Alps does not have to mean expensive hotels or crowded campsites. If you know where to look and what rules to follow, you can enjoy the mountains to the fullest even on a minimal budget. Cheap accommodation in the Alps is now much more accessible thanks to smart apps and bivouacking options.
We had to try out all these options ourselves. That’s why in this article we share specific tips on the apps we use, the basic rules of bivouacking, and wild camping in the Alps.
Of course, you have to expect a certain amount of discomfort. Unlike campsites, which offer facilities and a certain level of comfort, bivouacking and sleeping outside of official sites is more about flexibility and respect for nature. On the other hand, it allows you to get closer to the mountains and often to places you wouldn’t otherwise be able to reach.
Thanks to these options, we can afford to go to the Alps every year, even on a low budget, and discover new places without the stress of expensive accommodation.
The StayFree app is great for finding cheap or even free places to stay in the Alps. You’ll find reviews from other travelers, photos, and important details, so you know exactly what you’re getting into.
In exchange for visiting the hotel restaurant, we once stayed right in front of a luxury hotel in Austria thanks to StayFree. We were even able to use their toilets. You can find opportunities like this in the Alps if you know where to look.
If you don’t mind a community and local experience, Schau auf Land is a great choice. The app allows you to stay on private land, often in exchange for a little help on the farm or purchasing local products.
Membership is paid annually:

The ideal solution if you are looking for legal and inexpensive accommodation in the Alps.
Park4night is an app you can’t do without. It offers a huge database of parking lots, campsites, and free spots across Europe. It’s ideal for spontaneous travel and quick decisions.
For each location, you’ll find photos, reviews, and experiences from others. We use it both for quick overnight stays and for finding free parking in cities.
Rules for bivouacking in the Alps
What exactly is bivouacking and what is permitted in the Alps?
Bivouacking means spending one night outdoors outside of an official campsite, either in a tent or without one. Definitions and rules vary from one Alpine country to another, so it is important to be familiar with local legislation.
Italy
In Italy, bivouacking from sunset to sunrise is generally tolerated unless there is a ban in a specific location.
However, stricter restrictions or a complete ban may apply in protected areas (national parks, reserves, etc.).
Switzerland
There is no uniform national law in Switzerland.
Outside protected areas, spending the night in nature is generally tolerated, especially in higher mountain locations.
In national parks and reserves, bivouacking is usually prohibited.
France
In France, bivouacking is often permitted between sunset and sunrise.
However, some parks have specific rules or designated bivouacking areas that must be observed.
Austria
Austria has the strictest rules for bivouacking in the mountains compared to other Alpine countries. At the same time, it is important to know that specific rules vary from state to state.
- In protected areas (national parks, nature reserves, protected landscape areas, etc.), camping and planned bivouacking are prohibited.
- Bivouacking is not permitted on municipal or state land, unless the municipality or federal state stipulates otherwise.
- In the federal state of Styria, for example, bivouacking in high mountain terrain is not generally prohibited, but requires considerate behavior towards nature.
Recommendations for camping in the Alps:
- Choose high-altitude, low-impact terrain.
- Stay briefly and inconspicuously.
- Do not light fires.
- Leave the place in the same condition you found it!
Conclusion: How to spend the night in the Alps cheaply and with respect for nature
Cheap accommodation in the Alps is possible if you know where to look and how to behave in the mountains. Thanks to apps such as StayFree, Park4Night, or Schau aufs Land, you can plan your overnight stay without unnecessary costs. Whether you choose to bivouac in the high mountains, stay on private property, or simply park near a trail, always check the local rules.
The rules for wild camping and bivouacking in the Alps vary not only from country to country, but often from region to region or federal state to federal state. Therefore, it is good to be informed, behave considerately, and remember that the mountains are not only a place for adventure, but also home to nature and local people.
In our opinion, it is essential to read the experiences of others and remain inconspicuous. The smaller the footprint you leave behind, the greater the chance that these options will remain open to other travelers.
The mountains give us freedom, and it is up to us to use it responsibly.
